SUMMARY
Existing Knowledge:
Globalization of Higher Education: With the rise of globalization, many countries have internationalized their higher education systems to attract students from around the world. This often includes offering courses in English and fostering diverse learning environments.
China’s Growing Appeal for International Students: China has become an increasingly popular destination for international students due to its economic growth and cultural influence. Chinese universities have been actively working to attract students by promoting educational partnerships and offering scholarships.
Challenges in Internationalization: Despite efforts to internationalize, universities worldwide often face challenges, including language barriers, cultural differences, and varying teaching styles that may not cater well to international students' needs.
New Insights from this Study:
Language Barrier Issues: The study reveals that, although some Chinese universities offer courses in English, language barriers persist. Many international students struggle with communication, as instructors may lack proficiency in English, or course materials may not be fully translated.
Limited Cultural Adaptation in Teaching: International students in China report that teaching methods and classroom interactions are often based on traditional Chinese approaches, which emphasize memorization and less interaction. This can be challenging for students from more discussion-based educational backgrounds.
Lack of Support for International Students: The study highlights a perceived lack of institutional support for international students, with limited academic resources and orientation programs tailored to their needs. This affects their ability to adjust and succeed academically.
Putting Research into Practice:
Enhancing Language Support: Chinese universities could increase English language training for faculty and offer more comprehensive language support for international students. Establishing English-language resources and support centers can facilitate better communication and learning outcomes.
Adapting Teaching Methods for Diverse Classrooms: To improve international students’ experiences, instructors can adopt more inclusive and interactive teaching methods, such as group discussions and case studies. Training on multicultural classroom management could further aid instructors in meeting diverse student needs.
Strengthening Student Support Services: Universities can enhance orientation programs and provide ongoing academic and cultural support services for international students. Creating mentoring programs and peer support networks can also help students navigate their new learning environment more effectively.
