SUMMARY
EXISTING KNOWLEDGE:
Mother Tongue Use in Language Learning: Previous research suggests that using a student’s first language (L1) in foreign language (FL) classrooms can support comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and overall learning, though opinions on its effectiveness vary.
Student Perceptions of L1 in the Classroom: High school students generally see mother tongue use as a tool for clarification and reducing anxiety in learning a new language. However, over-reliance on L1 can sometimes hinder immersion in the foreign language.
Teacher Beliefs vs. Student Needs: Teachers may hesitate to use L1, aiming for full FL immersion. Yet, students often express that selective L1 use aids their understanding, suggesting a potential gap between teaching philosophy and student preference.
NEW INSIGHTS FROM THE QUOTED STUDY:
Positive Student Attitudes Toward L1 Use: The study shows that most high school students support mother tongue usage in the FL classroom, particularly for complex explanations and vocabulary, which boosts confidence and comprehension.
Moderation is Key: While students appreciate L1 support, they also recognize the importance of immersion. They prefer L1 as a supplementary tool, especially in grammar instruction, rather than a primary mode of communication.
Cultural Factors in L1 Preference: The research highlights cultural influences on student attitudes, with some students associating L1 use with comfort and familiarity, which fosters a supportive learning environment in the classroom.
PUTTING RESEARCH INTO PRACTICE:
Strategic L1 Integration: Teachers could consider a balanced approach, using L1 selectively to clarify difficult concepts while maintaining FL immersion for regular instruction to support engagement.
Training for Teachers: Programs could equip teachers with strategies for effective L1 integration, aligning with student preferences to enhance comprehension without compromising immersion.
Foster Communication: Encouraging dialogue between teachers and students about their language needs can help tailor L1 use in ways that maximize learning and reduce student anxiety.
