SUMMARY
Existing Knowledge:
Vocabulary acquisition is a crucial aspect of learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL), and various teaching methods have been explored to enhance learners' outcomes.
Learners' personality traits, particularly extroversion and introversion, play a significant role in their language learning preferences and effectiveness.
The use of mother tongue (L1) in EFL teaching has been debated, with some advocating its benefits in vocabulary learning while others stress full immersion in the target language.
New Insights from this Study:
The study found that mother tongue translation (L1) positively impacted vocabulary retention for both extroverted and introverted learners, though introverts benefited more.
Extroverted learners, generally more confident in communicative activities, showed less reliance on L1 translation but still saw improvement in vocabulary learning when it was used.
The research suggests that introverted learners, who may be more reflective and cautious, gain more from the use of L1 in vocabulary acquisition, as it supports their learning style.
Putting Research into Practice:
EFL instructors should consider incorporating mother tongue translation for vocabulary teaching, especially when working with introverted learners, to boost retention and comprehension.
Teachers should tailor their approaches to learners' personality traits, using L1 translation for introverts while offering more interactive, target-language-focused activities for extroverts.
The study highlights the need for a balanced approach in language classrooms, where mother tongue translation is strategically used without overshadowing the importance of immersive language experiences.
