SUMMARY
Existing Knowledge:
Mother Tongue Based – Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) is recognized as an effective approach to language learning, promoting the use of learners' first languages in educational settings to enhance understanding and retention.
Teacher education programs play a crucial role in preparing educators to implement MTB-MLE strategies, but many programs lack a comprehensive curriculum that incorporates multilingual education.
Previous research has highlighted the challenges faced by teachers and administrators in integrating MTB-MLE into existing curricula, including a lack of resources, training, and institutional support.
New Insights from this Study:
The study revealed that both administrators and teachers acknowledge the benefits of MTB-MLE, noting improved student engagement and performance when instruction is delivered in students’ mother tongues.
Key challenges identified include insufficient training for teachers on MTB-MLE methodologies and a lack of coordination between educational policies and practices at the local level.
Successful integration of MTB-MLE into the teacher education curriculum requires collaboration among stakeholders, including curriculum developers, teacher educators, and policymakers, to create a cohesive framework.
Putting Research into Practice:
Teacher education programs should be redesigned to include comprehensive modules on MTB-MLE, equipping future educators with the skills and knowledge to implement multilingual strategies effectively.
Continuous professional development opportunities must be established for in-service teachers to enhance their understanding of MTB-MLE practices and to share successful teaching strategies.
Stakeholders must work together to create supportive policies that promote the use of MTB-MLE in schools, ensuring that resources and training are accessible to all educators to foster a multilingual learning environment.
