Welcome to this issue on "Outdoor Learning in Schools"
Dear reader,
As education increasingly moves toward student-centered and experiential approaches, outdoor learning offers a timely and powerful shift in how we think about classrooms. Learning beyond walls—amid trees, in gardens, on playgrounds, and in urban parks—invites children to connect with nature, with each other, and with real-world problems. This issue of Excellent Educator brings together eight insightful studies that demonstrate how outdoor learning not only enhances engagement and curiosity, but also supports emotional well-being, collaborative thinking, and sustainability education. From Forest School models in Canada to post-pandemic teacher perspectives in Europe, each summary illustrates the diverse potential of outdoor spaces as fertile grounds for learning. Whether it is fostering inquiry in science, redesigning schoolyards for sustainable development, or boosting intrinsic motivation through play, these research-backed practices remind us that learning happens best when it’s active, inclusive, and rooted in the real world. We hope this collection of summaries inspires educators to step outside—both literally and pedagogically—and reimagine their classrooms under open skies.
Warm regards,
Dr. E. Mahiban Ross, Chief Editor, Excellent Educator
