SUMMARY
Existing Knowledge:
Noise pollution, especially from road traffic, is linked to health issues, with limited research on its effects on children’s cognition.
Aircraft noise has been associated with reduced reading and memory skills in children, but road traffic noise remains underexplored.
Working memory and attention are critical for academic success and develop actively between ages 7 and 10.
New Insights:
A study of 2,680 children in Barcelona schools found that road traffic noise at schools (indoor and outdoor) slows cognitive development.
Higher outdoor noise levels and fluctuations were linked to slower improvement in working memory and attentiveness over 12 months.
Noise exposure at home showed no significant impact, highlighting the critical role of school noise environments.
Putting Research into Practice:
Noise Mitigation at Schools: Implement soundproofing measures and noise barriers, particularly for classrooms exposed to heavy traffic.
Acoustic Policies: Enforce stricter regulations for noise levels around schools to protect cognitive development.
Enhanced Classroom Design: Incorporate noise-absorbing materials and create quieter learning spaces to reduce distraction and improve focus.
