SUMMARY
EXISTING KNOWLEDGE
Language Inequity in Education: English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) programs are increasingly popular but often amplify inequities, favoring students proficient in English and marginalizing others.
Challenges of EMI Programs: Studying in English can hinder comprehension and confidence in non-native English contexts, limiting access to educational content and affecting students' academic outcomes.
Language Rights and Access: Language rights in education suggest that students should learn in a language they understand well, promoting inclusion. EMI programs, however, frequently prioritize English, raising concerns about accessibility and fairness.
NEW INSIGHTS FROM THIS STUDY
Impact on Non-English Speakers: Alhamami’s study shows that EMI programs disproportionately disadvantage students from lower socio-economic backgrounds with less English exposure, affecting their academic success and career prospects.
Language Hierarchies and Identity: EMI programs often foster language hierarchies, where English is viewed as superior, potentially eroding cultural identity and devaluing local languages in education.
Teachers' Role in Equity: Teachers in EMI programs often lack training to support linguistic diversity, which can worsen inequality. Alhamami calls for teacher education to address these issues and promote equity in multilingual settings.
PUTTING RESEARCH INTO PRACTICE
Enhance Teacher Training: Teacher preparation should include strategies for supporting non-English-speaking students in EMI settings to foster inclusivity and equitable outcomes.
Promote Multilingual Education: Schools should incorporate local languages alongside English in EMI programs, allowing students to access content while building English skills.
Raise Awareness of Language Rights: Schools and policymakers should emphasize language rights, advocating for accessible, inclusive education that respects all language backgrounds.
