SUMMARY
Existing Knowledge:
Research has shown that students often struggle with mathematical word problems due to language barriers, particularly when the language of instruction differs from their mother tongue.
Mother-tongue based instruction (MTBI) is advocated as a pedagogical approach that uses students’ first languages to improve comprehension and facilitate learning across various subjects, including mathematics.
Previous studies have indicated positive effects of MTBI on overall academic performance, but there has been limited research specifically focusing on its impact on mathematical problem-solving skills.
New Insights from this Study:
The study found that pupils who received instruction in their mother tongue demonstrated significantly improved skills in solving mathematical word problems compared to those taught in a second language.
The research revealed that students were better able to comprehend and interpret problem statements when presented in their first language, leading to more accurate and efficient problem-solving strategies.
Teachers reported increased student engagement and participation during MTBI lessons, noting that students felt more confident and willing to take risks in their learning.
Putting Research into Practice:
Schools should implement mother-tongue based instruction strategies in their mathematics curriculum, ensuring that lessons are accessible and relatable to students’ linguistic backgrounds.
Teacher training programs should emphasize the importance of MTBI, equipping educators with the skills and resources necessary to effectively incorporate students’ mother tongues into mathematics instruction.
Educational policymakers need to advocate for policies that support the use of mother tongues in the classroom, providing funding and resources for the development of instructional materials that cater to multilingual learning environments.
