SUMMARY
EXISTING KNOWLEDGE:
Language Transfer in Bilingualism: Language transfer refers to how a speaker’s first language (L1) impacts the learning of a second language (L2). Positive transfer occurs when similarities between L1 and L2 aid learning, while negative transfer may cause errors.
Spanish and English Similarities: Spanish and English share linguistic features, particularly in vocabulary and grammar due to their Latin roots. This offers an advantage for Spanish speakers learning English.
L1’s Role in L2 Acquisition: Previous research suggests strategic use of L1 can support L2 acquisition, particularly when learners face complex materials or difficult concepts.
NEW INSIGHTS
Spanish as a Resource in L2 Learning: Pérez-Cabello and Quinn’s study highlights how Spanish can aid in learning English, making the process smoother. By leveraging similarities in vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure, Spanish speakers have an easier time grasping English concept.
Positive Transfer in Vocabulary and Grammar: The study found that cognates (words like "information" in English and "información" in Spanish) help students make connections. Similar grammatical structures, such as subject-verb-object order, also support language learning.
L1 Support for Lower-Proficiency Learners: The study suggests that lower-proficiency learners benefit from the use of Spanish in scaffolding English learning, reducing anxiety and improving comprehension.
PUTTING RESEARCH INTO PRACTICE
Emphasize Cross-Linguistic Similarities: Teachers should highlight cognates and grammar similarities between Spanish and English to aid comprehension and vocabulary retention.
Encourage Positive Transfer: Activities should encourage students to transfer knowledge from Spanish to English, boosting their confidence and language proficiency.
Use L1 for Lower-Level Learners: Teachers can use Spanish strategically to explain complex English concepts, making learning more accessible for beginners.
