SUMMARY
EXISTING KNOWLEDGE:
Number Sense Development: Research indicates that number sense—the ability to understand, relate, and connect numbers—is crucial for mathematical proficiency, especially in early education. Effective development of number sense sets the foundation for future mathematical learning.
Importance of Language in Mathematics: Previous studies have shown that the language of instruction can significantly affect students' comprehension and engagement in math. Using the mother tongue in early grades is believed to enhance understanding of mathematical concepts.
Challenges in Multilingual Classrooms: Students in multilingual settings often face challenges when math instruction is delivered in a second language, which can impede their ability to develop strong numeracy skills.
NEW INSIGHTS FROM THIS STUDY
Enhanced Numeracy Skills with Mother Tongue: The study finds that primary grade pupils who receive mathematics instruction in their mother tongue demonstrate better numeracy skills compared to those taught in a second language. This underscores the importance of language in understanding mathematical concepts.
Cultural Relevance and Engagement: The use of the mother tongue in teaching math not only improves comprehension but also fosters greater engagement and motivation among students, as they can relate better to the content being taught.
Long-Term Benefits: The findings suggest that early exposure to math concepts in the mother tongue may lead to long-term benefits in students' overall mathematical proficiency, laying a stronger foundation for future learning.
PUTTING RESEARCH INTO PRACTICE
Mother Tongue Instruction in Math: Implement mother tongue-based instruction in primary grade mathematics to enhance students' understanding and confidence in numeracy skills.
Teacher Training on Language Use: Provide training for educators on the effective use of the mother tongue in teaching math, equipping them with strategies to facilitate learning in multilingual classrooms.
Develop Culturally Relevant Materials: Create math instructional materials that incorporate local language and cultural contexts, making learning more relevant and engaging for students.
