SUMMARY
Existing Knowledge:
Language of Instruction Impact: Research indicates that using pupils' mother tongue as the medium of instruction during the early years of education can improve comprehension and engagement. It helps students grasp basic concepts before transitioning to additional languages.
Policy Challenges: While many regions advocate for mother tongue-based multilingual education (MTB-MLE), its implementation faces obstacles, such as limited resources and teacher preparedness. These challenges affect the overall quality and consistency of MTB-MLE programs.
Academic Performance Correlation: Studies show a positive correlation between MTB-MLE and improved academic performance in subjects like mathematics and science, especially among young learners. Using the mother tongue fosters a better learning environment and increases participation.
New Insights from this Study:
Teacher Challenges: The study reveals that teachers often face difficulties in delivering MTB-MLE due to inadequate training and resources. This limitation hinders their ability to effectively teach subjects in the mother tongue.
Student Adjustment Issues: While MTB-MLE can enhance understanding, some students struggle when transitioning to additional languages, particularly when switching from their mother tongue to English. This transition can impact their academic performance in later years.
Parental Attitudes and Involvement: The study finds that parental attitudes towards MTB-MLE significantly influence its effectiveness. Support from parents positively affects pupils' adaptation and performance, while resistance can create barriers to learning.
Putting Research into Practice:
Strengthening Teacher Training: It is essential to provide teachers with adequate training in MTB-MLE methodologies and resources to ensure effective delivery. Continuous professional development can equip teachers to handle the diverse linguistic needs of students.
Phased Language Transition: Introducing a phased approach to language transition could help students adjust better. Gradual exposure to additional languages like English alongside the mother tongue can ease the shift and support consistent academic performance.
Community and Parental Engagement: Building strong partnerships with parents and the local community can foster a supportive environment for MTB-MLE. Conducting awareness programs to highlight the benefits of MTB-MLE can encourage positive attitudes and active parental involvement in the learning process.
